Uplink Interference

Direction Finding

MTN Cyprus Ltd

In 2009, MTN identified major signal quality problems in its GSM900 uplink band. The problem mainly affected base station sites which were close to the sea. At the same period, MTN’s customer support received complaints about low voice quality for the same sites. Netfon was assigned to investigate the matter and report accordingly.

Netfon carried out direction finding EMF measurements in the vicinity of the affected stations, in both vertical and horizontal polarization. The results of the EMF measurements performed, showed that there was radio interference originating from the sea, coming from a south-east direction. A detailed report was prepared and submited to MTN, which escalated the problem to the local authorities in Cyprus and the problem was eventually resolved a few months thereafter.
